The Royal Scots Fusiliers had a particularly close link with this area as their training Battalion - the 3rd Battalion - was based at Fort Matilda and could be seen throughout the war training at the Battery Park, on the Esplanade and in the hills around the local towns. The men would be a constant presence in the cinemas, dance halls and other forms of entertainment in the area. There would be concerts put on by them and for them. Over the years of the war the RSF were reckoned to have trained 12 Battalions per year. The troops, once ready would have marched up to Fort Matilda station to the sounds of pipes and drums, before heading off to the Western Front.
