Son of Mr. and Mrs. James Fleming, of Kilmory, Skelmorlie. age 32.
Malcolm James Henderson Fleming was born on the 27th April 1883 to James Fleming, a merchant, and Jane Fleming in Skelmorlie, Ayrshire. He was educated at Routenburn Raspur? School in Largs and then Fettes College in Edinburgh before going to Hanover and then Lausanne to perfect his German and French.
In 1903 he went to the University of Glasgow for a single year to study science and took: Engineering, Chemistry and Mathematics.
He worked for a variety of companies as an apprentice in Paisley and Berlin; following this he worked for Fleming, Reid & Co in Greenock reaching a managerial position.
In 1911 he joined the 5th Bn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and obtained his commission as Lieutenant in 1912. Upon the outbreak of war he volunteered for Imperial Service, leaving Dunfermline for Egypt in May 1915. Towards the end of June he was wounded at Gallipoli in Achi Baba having led a bombing party, calling it a "marvellous charge". On board the hospital ship Asturias he insisted others get treatment before him. He died on the 14th July 1915, aged 32, and was buried at sea. Lieutenant Malcolm James Henderson Fleming is commemorated on the Helles Memorial on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey.
Lieutenant Fleming, with 36 bombers charged in the first wave of attack on the 12th July with 220 men of C Company. Wounded, he died of his injuries on board HS Asturia on the 14th July and was buried at sea.
