John MacVicar was born in Oban and then moved to Kempock St in Gourock about 1910. After the war he became a very well known and popular lay preacher. He is buried in Gourock cemetery.

John MacVicar served with the 8th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders before going on to the Machine Gun Corps and then finally the Labour Corps. He attested in Dunoon
