Educated in Greenock and Fettes and after being 6 years in the Glasgow Branch of the National Bank of Scotland went to Rangoon in the service of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Co returning on holiday leave he joined the RNVR Clyde Division with which he had previously been connected and was very soon promoted to the rank of Lieutenant. He was the son of Mr John Campbell Hart, for many years agent of the National Bank of Scotland in Greenock. Lieutenant Geary in the Collingwood History claims he was attached to the Anson Bn with whom he was seen to fall while leading them forward in true British style. Born Sept 22nd 1886, son of the late John Cambell Hart of the National Bank of Scotland and Finnart House, Greenock. Husband of Mrs AF Hart. Educated at Collegiate School, Greenock and Fettes College in Edinburgh 1900-1903. After leaving school he was employed by the National Bank of Scotland. In November 1906 he was gazetted Sub Lieutenant in the Clyde Division of the RNVR. He served on HMS Cochrane in 1907, passed the gunnery course at Whale Island, Portsmouth Hampshire and the signalling course in 1908 and served aboard HMS Bulwark in 1909. In November 1909 he resigned his commission to take up a position with the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company in Rangoon Burma. In December 1914 after the outbreak of war he returned to England on leave and joined the RNVR with this former rank. After training at Crystal palace for a few weeks he was appointed Second in Command C Company.
