Nephew of Sir Hugh Shaw Stewart and heir to the Ardgowan Estates.

Military Cross

Joined the Guards prior to the outbreak of war in 1911 as 2nd Lieutenant and was promoted to Captain by September 1915 finsihing as Major. Wounded three times. Once on 6th November 1914. Awarded Military Cross for bravery in action. At the Battle of the Somme he was the 1st Brigade's Transport Officer
