Walter served in the Royal Navy first on HMS Tiger and then on a submarine.

After the war he served on merchants ships as by trade he was a plumber. He died in 1972 and had a calmer war experience then his older brother Hugh. Walter had three children. After his death his children and wife moved to New Jersey.
