Awarded the DCM (Distinguished Conduct Medal). For conspicuous gallantry when defending a barricade. He jumped on to the firing step, and, regardless of danger, directed our bombs into that part of the enemy's trench from which his bombs were coming. He was apparently the first Gourock solider to be awarded a DCM. 

Wounded 12th July 1915 and admitted to Manchester Hospital.
