Remembering those who fought in the Great War.

Robert Smillie

Married, brother of John Smillie, butcher. An old Volunteer with the A & SH he retired with his long service medal. Called up on mobilisation he went through Ypres and Salonika. Transferred to RGA as Staff Sergeant Major. Left widow and 7 children, eldest of whom is serving with Cameron Highlanders. Prior to war Robert was employed by G & J McOnie, engineers at Ladyburn.

In a letter to his widow the officer says deceased was in the artificers shop with three others when a shell burst and instantly killed all four. Your husband was a fine workman and I shall miss him at the Battery. It is particularly sad to think that your husband should have been killed whilst serving in a comparatively safe place after having been so long in the infantry
