Son of Mr and Mrs James McCartney. 

Brother of Andrew, Harry and Samuel who were serving in the Royal Irish Fusiliers and brother of William who was serving in Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.  He also had a sister who was undertaking hospital work in France. His brother W.J. was in the Royal Irish Fusiliers and died on April 26th 1916.
