“Port-Glasgow Man in Hospital at Malta.

“It was a fateful day that twelfth of July at Achi-Baba for the men and boys of Port-Glasgow. The photograph we herewith publish is that of Private Patrick Hurrell, No. 1400, 1-5th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. He fought and was wounded at Achi-Baba, and is still undergoing treatment in a convalescent hospital at Malta. Before the war Private Hurrell was an apprentice riveter with Messrs. William Hamilton & Co. His wife and little infant daughter six month old reside at 3 Laird Street.” [1]

Hurrell's service record shows two admissions to hospital at Helles, on 9th July and 27th September 1915 respectively, suffering from diarrhoea on both occasions. The second time he must have been more seriously ill, being evacuated to Malta, entering the St. John's Hospital on 4th October 1915.

After recuperating he rejoined his unit in Egypt on 17th February 1916. Hurrell, promoted to corporal on 18th March 1918, was wounded in action in Palestine on 29th July 1918.
