Attested 24/12/14. Posted 31/12/14. Killed in action at Ypres at 8 am by a shell. 'He had just drawn his breakfast and was on his way back to his part of the trench whwn a high explosive shell came over and struck him in the mouth, killing him and the sergeant of the company. They were both buried beside the Headquarters about 30 yards from where they were killed.' His commanding officer Capt R Wemyss-Campbell wrote that 'he was a good soldier and did his duty to the last'
