Son of Sir Walter Richard and Lady Mary Shaw-Stewart of Hays House, Sedgehill, Wiltshire (and of Fonthill Abbey Wiltshire)
Brother of Walter G, Mary Sybel Agnes, Irene Beatrice and Michael Sydney
Niel Shaw-Stewart was barely 20 when he volunteered at the outbreak of war in August 1914. Within the first year, he sustained severe shrapnel wounds to his knee at Ypres with 1st Battalion Rifle Brigade. After returning home for an operation and convalescence, he rejoined his regiment. Two years into his service, he was attached to D Company 3rd Battalion and was sent into the front line nine days before he was killed.
Lt Niel Shaw-Stewart, 3rd Bn Rifle Brigade, killed in action 21 August 1916 age 22. RIP
St Catherine’s Church WW1 plaque reads:
