Remembering those who fought in the Great War.

John Greig Mitchell

SON OF WILLIAM ANDERSON MITCHELL AND ELIZABETH MITCHELL, OF FERGUSON PLACE, INVERKIP, RENFREWSHIRE.

John enlisted in Stockport. In his will he left everything he had to his mother, Elizabeth. He was killed in action.

On 11 August 1918, the 4th King's were in trenches near the northern French village of Terdeghem. The Battalion's War Diary makes no mention of casualties, although John is recorded as being killed in action. However, he is buried about 25 kilometres away in the Belgian town of Ieper and it could be assumed that, on that day, he had been attached to another unknown unit. Alternatively, it is possible the he was not killed in action and was only wounded. This would account for him being evacuated from the front towards field hospitals in the rear, but that he died before reaching them. One of his comrades, Albert Moore, is also buried in the same Cemetery having died that day. It is, now, not possible to establish how John died. http://www.stockport1914-1918.co.uk/soldier.php?name_id=1817
