James Fyfe Holmes

Son of J Fyfe Holmes, Pyrmont., Kilmacolm. 

James Fyfe Holmes was born in Kilmacolm in 1895, the son of James Holmes, a mason, and his wife Elizabeth. In March 1910, when he was 15 years old, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Kilmacolm branch.

In September 1914 Holmes left the bank to join the army, initially as a Private in the Highland Infantry. He is noted as having been wounded in 1916. He was later commissioned into the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles). Second Lieutenant James Fyfe Holmes was killed in action in France on 23 March 1918.
