Remembering those who fought in the Great War.

George Augustus Macleod

Son of Norman and Mary Macleod, 10 Mearns Street, Greenock.

The Australian government steamship Australdale SS with a cargo of coal from Wales to Gibraltar was sailing in convoy when she was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine U-22. The attack occurred off the N.W. coast of Spain on October 19th, 1917. Three boats got away, of which the lifeboat with 27 men was never heard of again. The other boats managed to make a landing in France, but two men died while the boats were adrift.
