Was based in Mullingar Co. Meath for training in the middle of 1916 as part of Kitcheners second army.. At this time he was with the 4th Battalion, C Company - a training Battalion. Sent abroad he was at the 16th Infantry Base Depot in Etaples waiting to go up the line. The 9th Battalionwas attached to the 48th Brigade in the 16th(Irish) Division. He talks in a letter to his brother Alex about being in a draft for Serbia but was taken off it. In a letter of 4th October 1916 he talks about having a lively time of it in the trenches, that the weather was bad and that "you would have your eyes opened as to the life you have got to lead here". 66 men of the Dublins were killed on the attack on Ginchy on9/9/16. On the 7th January 1917 he is reported by a nurse in the 12th CCS as having suffered a severe head wound - unconscious, he died shortly after arrival.
