Arthur S Hay

Listed in the 'Men of Greenock' - an Arthur S L Hay is listed in SNWM born in Galway. Likely to be same person.Son of John Walker Hay and Martha Jane Hay, of Florida Villa, Duff Avenue, Elgin, Morayshire. His father worked in Customs which would explain his connection with Greenock.

Arthur S. Hay was recruited by Captain Eric Stanley (an established actor pre- and post-war) to join "The Balmorals", the Seaforths' entertainment troupe which he, Stanley, had founded. He played the part of Tom Lanky in the 1917/1918 production of Stanley's entertainment 'Turnip Tops'. They played the Municipal Theatre in Amiens as late as March 1918, soon before Hay's death. He died of pneumonia.

The Balmorals (name of entertainment troupe) were one of at least three such regimental troupes that performed at or just behind the front. Eric Stanley (Captain) formed them for the Seaforths. He was a member of the D'Oyly Carte Company and used his expertise to write, stage -- and recruit for -- the ensemble.
