Son of Mr and Mrs James McCartney. 

Brother of Samuel and Harry who were also serving in the Royal Irish Fusiliers, brother of William who was serving in Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and Robert who was serving in the Royal Navy. He also had a sister who was undertaking hospital work in France. His brother W.J. was in the same regiment and died on April 26th 1916.
