On November 2nd, 1917, the British steamer SS Cape Finisterre, on a voyage from New York & Falmouth to Brest with a cargo of steel billets, was sunk by the German submarine UC-17 (Ulrich Pilzecker), 1 miles SSE of the Manacle Buoy. 35 persons were killed.
